The winners will be announced in the fall, and will be rewarded with a $15,500 prize designed to help take the business to the next level. Every Little Bit is an online store featuring everyday-use, eco-friendly products ranging from personal care items to organic cotton clothing to household necessities and toys. They carry a blend of sustainably made, yet stylish products. With detailed product descriptions, including a specific eco-rating for each product, Every Little Bit helps the more mainstream consumer start shopping “green”, without sacrificing style. The founders strongly believe that “every little bit” does indeed count.
The founders of Every Little Bit are Alison Ferguson and Meaghan Relkie, and like most “mom-preneurs”, they want to balance the work/family/personal growth challenge facing all moms. “We both have two girls under 5 and while we significantly enjoy our corporate lives, we want the flexibility to work around family life and community commitments” commented Ferguson. “We want to take our own business idea from its infancy up to profitability. We like the learning curve we’re both experiencing, as well as the successes we’re seeing early in the company’s life”.
The founders were finding it difficult to find eco-friendly products without ordering from the US or from multiple sites, so after significant market research and customer focus groups, they launched the site on November 30th, 2008. Customer feedback has been incredibly positive: “I’m thrilled with this one-stop shop where I can get a wide variety of products, from cleaning products to gifts. And I particularly like the eco-ratings about each product” commented Megan Eastwood, a customer from Port Coquitlam, BC. Al Bieber of Winnipeg concurs. “It’s a really easy site to use with a lot of product choices that are better for the environment, and great customer service”.
“If we are honoured with the title of Mom Entrepreneurs of the Year, we plan to use the award money to help us expand our product inventory since there are always innovative green products coming to the market that would appeal to our customers” advised Relkie “And, we’d spend some time and dollars on increasing awareness of our company.”
