Lunch Bags – Reusable and Litterless Lunch Systems

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

By Mommy Footprint

Lunch Bags have transformed from the concept of traditional brown bags into functional and stylish lunch systems. We received our camouflage ACME Lunch Bag from the online store Every Little Bit and I’m so happy with my testing of my first ever lunch bag. Additional features to the ACME lunch bag is it’s roomy compartment with adjustable strap and ice pack.  The size of the ACME brand is big enough for an adult sized stainless steel water bottle and several reusable containers. The bag comes with an ice pack that fits into an inside pocket so anyone sending meats, yogurt, salad, etc. can rest easily that it’s cold enough to sit all day before eating. Every Little Bit does have a girlie color in the ACME brand lunch bag (although I love green camo for both boys and girls) in a fun Berry color, both with the great price point of $20.95.

Researching littlerless lunch systems has long been a favorite topic at Mommy Footprint. I talk to parents wherever I go and ask what their favourite system of packing lunches for kids that are in school all day. What I’ve learned is that everyone has a different system or preference to how lunches work – both parents and children. It’s interesting how some parents really like packing food in separate containers, while others find that a system that’s attached via a tiffin or lunchbox style works the best for their household. After hearing from several parents they enjoy using lunch bags – I turned my search to find an eco-friendly option and the ACME bags are a fantastic product. More things to love than their design and size is they are PVC and lead free.  This year, PVC- free products are a must with kids returning to school!  We need to start an uprising within our parent groups about how toxic and terrible PVC is for our children’s health and our planet. If the term PVC is new to you – it is the worst kind of plastic that is produced and is coded #3. It produces toxic dioxins when it’s made, off-gasses chemicals for it’s life-span, then never leaves our planet because there isn’t a way of disposing of it that doesn’t cause more harm to the environment; PVC doesn’t break down in a landfill or if it’s burned in an incinerator it again releases more carcinogenic dioxins into the air.  Not a pretty description of a plastic that is in probably most of your children’s toys and many back-to-school products that are pushed by the big box stores. Make PVC-free a focus with your back-to-school shopping this year – if not for the environment – then for the health of your kids. Okay…back to the awesome ACME Lunch Bags

yoyomamaToday we’ve got a slightly random collection of products that have three things in common – they’re better for your babe, better for the environment and make great valentine’s gifts….

We love our stainless steel snack storage containers, but they’re not always the lightest, most portable options around, which is when we turn to our Snack Taxi. A reusable alternative to plastic bags, we like their snack sacks best as they’re just the right size for a handful of cheddar bunnies, cheerios or carrots. With a cotton exterior and waterproofed nylon lining they’re heavy metal, phthalate, PBB and PBDE-free. And they can be machine washed and hung to dry, but they tend to take awhile to air dry so we save them for dry snacks that can be cleaned up with a quick wipe rather than a full on wash. We think if you stuffed them with fair trade chocolate they’d make perfect Valentine’s gifts: www.everylittlebitgreen.com

When you do manage to get your photos printed how do you store them? Hopefully not in a shoebox. We’ve raved about Ecojot’s stationery before and we also love this newer addition to their line, a photo album.  Made in Canada, it’s a handy-sized, glittery, acid-free, 30% post consumer recycled receptacle you can fill with pix of your tots and gift to grandma or let your kids use it to collate their own photo collections.  There’s a less glittery version you can snag as well: www.everylittlebitgreen.com

West Coast Moms - Meaghan Relkie, Every Little Bit, Mom of the Month
Meaghan Relkie

Co-founder & Vice-President, Product Strategy, Every Little Bit Eco-Shop Ltd.

Growing up, I was never one of those girls who dreamed of getting married and having children; in fact it didn’t cross my mind much at all. Not that I didn’t think I would or wouldn’t, but rather I just didn’t really think about it at all. I had a vision that family was just something that happened naturally and I was more focused on my professional success; I think I was taking my family for granted even before I had one.

Although I enjoyed work immensely, and worked hard at university – completing two bachelors degrees in both English and Psychology – I felt a void in my life that didn’t seem to be filled by career or educational success.

Then I met Ray; we had a fast romance…from friendship to dating to marriage. We hadn’t really decided on children; we figured we might some day but we were busy working hard, travelling and just enjoying ourselves. He wasoct_09_meaghan addicted to his job and I was done schooling and moved on to a variety of social activities. I began volunteering for an amazing organization (Soroptimist) jumping right in as Treasurer and then President for two years, I was training for and running in marathons every chance I got and I was becoming increasingly interested and active in environmental issues, all the while slowly changing the way my husband and I were treating the planet. Sweet Pea in a Pod – Droolicious Review

Babble

By Elizabeth Leach, Droolicious & Babble.com

Sweet Pea Glass Bottles and Pea Pod Covers are absolutely adorable. I love the baby in the pea pod logo! Of course, more importantly, glass bottles are better for baby because they are BPA free. The brightly colored neoprene bottle cover protects the bottle from breaking and helps keep the milk warm. The colors of the covers are more than just attractive. The creators of Sweet Pea Thumb_Bottle_Cover_PinkBottles wanted the bottles to be easy to find when lost under the crib or car seat. Smart!

Sweet Pea Glass Bottles (9 oz) are $8.95 and Pea Pod Bottle Covers (9 oz) are $7.95. Pea Pod Bottles are also available in 5 oz for $7.95 and Covers for $6.95. Both sizes are at Every Little Bit.

The Province

Name: Alison Ferguson  and Meaghan Relkie.

Business: Every Little Bit Eco-Shop, Port Moody, BC

Contact: 604-936-7249 www.everylittlebitgreen.com

Number of employees:
Two.

Time in business: One year.

What is your business?
We offer a general-purpose online store featuring green products for everyday needs. We have a variety of environmentally friendly products for use in the home, and provide research and a rating on our items.

How did you get started?
Meaghan and I met through a volunteer organization and began talking about the difficulties in finding environmentally friendly products. A lot of stores are focused on only one area, such as baby products, and sometimes it’s difficult to find the green alternatives at the stores — I couldn’t find glass baby bottles for two months. We thought we could offer a one-stop shop for green products and the Every Little Bit emerged.

What kinds of things do you sell?
We don’t carry foods, but we do sell things such as bottles, bowls, toothpaste, cards, cleaning products. We have about 300 products listed and we provide ratings to show how green they are . We also do our best to research each supplier to find out how the products are made.

Mom of the Month – Alison Ferguson

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Alison Ferguson
Co-founder & President, Every Little Bit Eco-Shop Ltd.

My name is Alison Ferguson and I’m thrilled to be the “Mom of the Month”.  Sometimes, however, it feels more like I’m “Mom of the Minute” – I think sustained excellence as a “mommy” is really hard work.

Don’t get me wrong; I love what I’m doing – I just thought it would come more “naturally” to me.  When I first had Amy I found it difficult to not compare myself to those yummy mummies with perky pony tails, a Starbucks in one hand, their uber-stroller in the other hand and their lovely quiet babies gurgling back at them, with the manuscript of their almost-complete children’s novel peeking out of their Prada bag. My little “demon baby”, as we called Amy then – due to the colic our paediatrician said was the worst she had seen in her 15 years of practice – did not simply have “witching hours”, she had “witching weeks”; if she was awake, she was screaming – not gentle baby cries, but rather head popping off –window shattering wails of agony.  Nope, nothing too “natural” about the baby gig for Paul & I.

Amy is 4 now.   She is a lovely and still spirited little girl.  And despite the clinical post partum depression that came with her birth, we crazily decided to do it again.  Kieran is now 20 months, and like Amy, she too was quite the rager at the beginning.  Paul & I frequently had to console ourselves with the paediatrician’s advice “well folks…all the studies indicate that colicky kids are extremely intelligent”.  Alright!  We have cranky mensa babies!
